ABOUT ELLEN

Ellen G. Levine, (M.S.W., Ph.D., LICSW, ATR-BC, REAT) is trained as a psychoanalytic child psychotherapist and expressive arts therapist. She is a licensed independent clinical social worker, a registered and Board Certified Art Therapist, a registered psychoanalyst (NAAP) and a registered expressive arts therapist. Her doctoral work was done in the program in Social and Political Thought at York University in Toronto. Her dissertation was entitled: “Psychoanalysis and Symbolism: The Space Between Self and World.”

In the summer school program at the European Graduate School in Saas Fee, Switzerland, Ellen is a Core Faculty, Professor and Dean of Individualized Studies in the Division of Arts, Health and Society. In Toronto, Canada, Ellen is a co-founder and faculty member of ISIS-Canada, a three-year training program in expressive arts therapy, and she is a Senior Staff Social Worker at the Hincks-Dellcrest Centre for Childrens Mental Health, where she teaches, supervises and practices in the areas of play therapy, group therapy and expressive arts therapy.

Ellen has worked for Medécins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders) as a consultant on a project for war-affected children, "More Than Bandages." She has exhibited her work as a visual artist in Canada, the United States and Switzerland and performs as a clown known as "Sadie" as often as she can.

Ellen is the author of Tending the Fire: Studies in Art, Therapy and Creativity (EGS Press), co-editor of Foundations of Expressive Arts Therapy: Theoretical and Clinical Perspectives (Jessica Kingsley Publishers), co-author of Principles and Practice of Expressive Arts Therapy: Toward a Therapeutic Aesthetics (Jessica Kingsley Publishers) and co-editor of In Praise of Poiesis: The Arts and Human Existence (EGS Press).

The EGS is a post-graduate university for professionals that takes place in the town of Saas Fee in the Swiss Alps each summer. Students and faculty from all over the world meet to participate in intensive training seminars in Expressive Arts Therapy, Education, Consulting and Social Change.

Ellen recently returned from the European Graduate School after teaching there for two months in June and July. She is currently living in Toronto where she co-teaches the third year of ISIS Canada and works part-time at the Hincks-Dellcrest Centre for Childrens’ Mental Heatlth.
